Warts

What is a Wart?

  • They are small skin overgrowth caused by human papilloma virus (HPV).
  • The HPV causes a hard protein i.e. 'Keratin' in the top layer of the skin to grow too much which produces the rough, hard texture of the wart.
  • They are responsible for different types of warts ranging from slender thread to lumps.
  • Children are having at risk as their immunity is comparatively lower.
  • They can occur on any part of the body including face, fingers, hands, foot, genitals etc.
  • They are not usually painful but verruca (warts of soles) can be painful.
  • They are contagious. They are spread by direct contact or autoinoculation.
  • Genital warts are sexually transmitted infection.
  • Warts are usually harmless but look unattractive. They many times clear up on its own, although treatment can help to get rid of them quickly.

Why It Occurs?

  • As we discussed above wart is an infectious disease caused by HPV.
  • Transmission occurs by direct contact of the wart. The incubation period varies from 1 to 12 months. Researches have shown that certain types of HPV can lie dormant for over 3 years also.
  • Apart from this some of the risk factors also play role in transmission of warts. They are.
  • Injury to the skin which comes in contact with the wart.
  • Swimming in public places.
  • Scratching or shaving your own warts.
  • Persons who have lower immunity.
  • Patients on certain treatments like chemotherapy (as their immunity go down.)
  • Genital warts are passed on during intercourse or very close sexual contact. However, most people infected with HPV do not develop visible warts. Such people transmit warts without realizing it.

How Can I Get Rid Of Warts?

Many persons don't bother about them as the treatment is more uncomfortable and troublesome than warts. As they cause embarrassment and some warts are painful many of the patients want to get rid of them as soon as possible. Treatment options depend on where the warts are and how many there are. Options include:

  • A variety of creams, gels, paints and medicated plasters are available from pharmacies. Most of these contain salicylic acid as their active ingredient. Salicylic acid and other wart treatments also destroy healthy skin, so it is important to protect the skin around the wart - use petroleum jelly or a corn plaster to cover it.
  • Chemical treatments - treatments containing chemicals such as formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and podophyllin can be used to remove warts. These chemicals are poisonous to skin cells. They are dabbed onto warts to kill the skin cells there. These treatments are available on prescription. They must not be used in pregnancy. If you feel any irritation on the skin, stop the treatment until discomfort settle down and follow the instruction of your physician. During use of this treatment take care of your healthy skin by applying cover or Vaseline.
  • Cryotherapy - it is a method of destroying wart by freezing the cells. Very cold liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the wart. A sore blister develops, followed by a scab, which falls off 7-10 days later. Treatment takes about 5-15 minutes and can be painful. Cryotherapy treatment is usually carried out at hospital skin clinics or at your GP surgery. Large warts sometimes need to be frozen several times, a week or so apart, before they clear. A hard freeze might cause a permanent white mark or scar.
  • Surgery- in this wart is removed under local or sometimes general anesthesia (possible in case of large warts) sometimes the skin of the wart is scaped off with a special instrument called curette. In anther method, called electrosurgery, warts are burnt off by diathermy or cautery. This procedure is conducted under local anesthesia and the wounds heal in about two weeks. Warts can also be burnt by laser. Scarring may occur in some cases.
  • Homeopathy- even after removal of warts from above painful and costly methods there will not be a guarantee that warts will not come again. As warts occur on the skin which is recurrently exposing to the infections they can't be eradicated until it is treated properly.
    • To get rid of them, we have to stimulate body's own immunity against the attack of wart virus.
    • Homeopathy has the capacity to stimulate this immune mechanism of the body.
    • From the many cases of warts we have seen that in 80% of the cases warts don't appear again.
    • In this system of medicine warts are removed in a gentle way without harming any healthy tissue of the body.
    • Thuja, causticum, lycopodium, dulcamara, nat.mur, etc. are some of the examples of medicines used in homeopathy to treat warts, yet it is advisable to consult a good homeopath before taking it as it is essential to get detailed history of the patient before selecting the right medicine for the best result.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

  • It is easy to prevent any disease than to treat it.
  • To prevent warts you have to take care or following simple points. They are.
  • Don't clip or shave areas having wart in order to prevent its spreading.
  • Don't share the same clothes or any other personal items with person having warts.
  • Avoid using the same file or nail clipper on your wart as you use on your healthy nails.
  • Don't bite your fingernails if you have warts near your fingernails.
  • Avoid picking the warts. Picking may spread the virus.
  • Wash your hands carefully after touching warts.
  • Keep the body parts as dry as possible, as warts are more difficult to control in a moist area.
  • Avoid using public places like swimming pool or gym if you have warts or cover the part having wart to avoid spreading to other persons.
  • Avoid using shoes & hard slippers in case of plantar warts.
